LAS VEGAS — The Clark County Commission has approved an ordinance to enact an increase in the local hotel room tax to help fund construction of a huge stadium they hope will bring the NFL’s Raiders to Las Vegas.
Commissioners also approved ordinances Tuesday to enact tax increases to pay for 315 new police officers and expand and renovate the Las Vegas Convention Center at a cost of $1.4 billion.
Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval signed legislation into law last month allowing for the tax increases.
Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani cast the only vote against the room-tax increase needed to pay the public’s $750 million share of the $1.9 billion stadium project. The plan calls for Las Vegas Sands CEO Sheldon to kick in $650 million and the Raiders $500 million.
NFL owners would have to approve the Raiders’ move from Oakland to Vegas.
