RENO — Carson High opened the 2016-17 girls basketball season with a 59-10 loss to defending High Desert champion Reno High.
Carson played without Ku’ulei Haupu and Katelyn Morse, who are both academically ineligible.
The game was played with a running clock for the final 17-minutes and 5-seconds of the contest after the Huskies built a 35-point lead late in the opening half.
Carson coach Melissa Larsen said she will use this as a learning tool, and she learned two big things.
The first was her two freshmen, Camryn Quilling and Bella Kordonoway, play hard. The second is the team needs to find some ballhandlers.
“I liked that my freshmen weren’t intimidated,” Larsen said. “They didn’t back away. Against the press we need to come to the ball and not force things. We couldn’t handle their intensity.
“Reno is a good team. They shoot the ball well and play good defense.”
The Huskies forced Carson into 22 first-half turnovers en route to building a 44-5 lead at the half.
Reno bolted to a 14-0 lead, 12 of the points coming off Carson mistakes. Lauren Lemburg ended the drought with a basket 5 1/2 minutes into the contest. Reno ended the quarter with a 21-2 lead.
Carson scored on a Dajarrah Navarro free throw 14 seconds into the second quarter, and the Huskies responded with 16 straight points to make it 37-5. Quilling ended that drought with a bucket with less than two minutes left. That was the last point Carson would score in the half, as Reno walked into the locker room with a 44-5 lead.
Lemburg, Quiling and Kordoinoway all had three points. Navarro had a single free throw.
Sierra Lutheran falls
Grace Bonafede scored seven points, Aleyna Gibson had seven rebounds and Clare Davison added six steals, but it wasn’t enough for the Sierra Lutheran varsity girls basketball team in a 32-23 loss to Loyalton.

Reno tops Carson
RENO – The Huskies outscored the Senators in every quarter en route to a season-opening 47-33 win Tuesday night.
Jackson Sayre led Carson with nine points followed by Gavin MacIntosh with seven and Danny Escalante added six.
