Rummage sale to benefit local vets in Carson City

There’s a rummage sale at Veterans Memorial Hall this weekend and it’s considered to be “a humonguosly huge” one, based on its flier and advertising.

Although there will be a variety of furniture, kitchenware, jewelry and clothing to choose from, the cash is going towards a good cause. Hosted by the Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association Unit 137, all proceeds are going towards veterans who are homeless or are in need.

“We have many veterans in the community that are in need of these everyday items,” said Joyce Jackson, secretary of the organization. “Each day we’re told about veterans who need help. We buy what veterans might need with the donated money.”

This is the first year the organization is hosting a rummage sale event. The goal is to raise $1,000 or more. The cash will also be split into future projects involving veterans.

However, the event is more like an auction than a garage sale. If customers find an item they like, they can negotiate a price with members of the organization as a donation.

“We aren’t selling,” Jackson said. “Our ladies have emptied out their closets and garages, and display them to encourage visitors to make a donation for each item they want to take home.”

The event is from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. today and Sunday, at Veterans Memorial Hall, located on 2nd and Curry Streets.
