A Carson City man was arrested Saturday morning after an attempted car-jacking turned into a kidnapping.

Deputies responded to the North Carson Street Days Inn motel at 12:08 a.m. Saturday for reports of a vehicle theft. The victim told deputies that when he arrived at the motel, he left his van with his 82-year-old disabled aunt inside and the keys in the ignition, to pay for a room, according to the police report. He said when he came back out, a Hispanic man — later identified as Casey Canto, 31, of Carson City — wearing dark clothing got into the driver’s side of the van and drove off with the female victim still inside.

The vehicle was spotted at 12:41 a.m. on College Parkway and Nye Lane and deputies attempted to conduct a high risk traffic stop. The suspect allegedly attempted to flee from police, however stopped near the 700 block of Silver Sage Drive after several deputies used their vehicles to block the suspect’s path.

The suspect was allegedly being uncooperative and taken out of the vehicle via the window before being Tased by deputies. According to the arrest report, the suspect was allegedly trying to resist deputies from placing handcuffs on him. The suspect was taken to Carson Tahoe Hospital to be medically cleared, and deputies said it looked like he may have been under the influence of a controlled substance.

Canto was arrested on suspicion of felony larceny of a motor vehicle, felony kidnapping in the second degree, DUI, obstruction and no valid driver’s license. Bail was set at $67,900.
