Prep roundup: CHS boys soccer picks up big win vs. Wooster

RENO — There were no shrieks of joy or chest thumping. There were, however, plenty of smiles and handshakes.

The Carson High boys soccer team did its best to treat Wednesday’s win like it was another day at the office. Hardly.

The Senators got goals from sophomore Trinity Ramirez and senior Guillermo Hernandez to knock off Wooster, 2-0. and move into second place in the Sierra League standings.

The win was Carson’s third straight over the Colts. Carson, after being swept in the regular season last year, beat the Colts twice in a span of six days to win the regional and state championship.

“It feels good,” Carson coach Frank Martinez said. “We’re jelling a little better. I know Wooster was missing some key players (Kendric Duve, midfelder, for one).

“We passed the ball better, It’s what we practice the most; movement of the ball.”

And, the defensive group of Peter Garrett, Christian Martinez, Isael Lopez and Osvaldo Gomez, put the clamps on the Colts in the second half. The Colts, after having and missing several good looks in the first half, had three chances in the second half.

“The defense was solid,” Martinez said. “I moved Osvaldo to the back when I knew I had other guys that could score. I’m going to keep him back there.”

Carson had a great opportunity earlier, as Hernandez blasted one the Wooster keeper tipped over the crossbar.

In the 16th minute, Carson had a good run and failed to get off a shot. Two minutes later, Jose Vidales was 1-on-1 with Efren Ramirez, and he mishit the ball. Garrett broke up a Wooster run from behind in the 24th minute. Four minutes later, Ramirez came up big on two different shots, one by Vidales and one by Eddie Lopez.

Carson started to settle down after that. Oscar Ventura and Ernesto Lamas had scoring opportunities, but missed high and wide, respectively.

The Senators finally broke through in the 37th minute when Christian Martinez played a high through ball to Ramirez, who found the back of the net to break the scoreless tie. Ramirez didn’t even remember who fed him the ball for his first goal of the season.

“I don’t remember,” said the soft-spoken Ramirez. “The ball was in the air, I saw it and ran to it as fast as I could. Once I got to it, I put as much body as I could get into it (shot).”

It didn’t take long for the Senators to extend their lead — three minutes to be exact.

The strong-legged Hernandez pounded home a direct kick to make it 2-0.

Hernandez had a chance to extend the lead in the 56th minute, but the Wooster keeper blocked Hernandez’s penalty kick. Four minutes later, Wooster turned the ball over deep in its own end, but Ventura misfired. Ventura missed wide again in the 69th minute, and Garrett’s header was wide in the 71st minute. Wooster had two chances in the final nine minutes

Carson improved to 8-2 heading into Saturday’s home match against Douglas at 10:45 a.m.

The Senators’ JV squad won 6-2.

VOLLEYBALL

Muckers sweep Pyramid

VIRGINIA CITY — Kaitlin Hames had five kills, nine digs and six aces to lead Virginia City to a 25-20, 25-14 and 25-9 win over Pyramid Tuesday night.

The Muckers are 15-2 overall and 7-1 in league.

Emily Heinz added five kills, 14 assists and four aces, Chelsea Nevin finished with 10 assists and five kills and Bethany Fuller had eight kills, two digs and four aces.

The JV won 2-0.

GIRLS SOCCER

Dayton blanks Lions

YERINGTON — Alaura Greenwalt scored twice and added an assist, and Citlaly Munoz also scored two goals to lead Dayton to a 6-0 win Tuesday afternoon.

Kristina Mason and Natalie Villafrana added a goal apiece. Gemma Acevedo, Claire Holloway and Sydney Strickler were credited with assists.
