No bidders to provide execution drugs to Nevada

Nevada’s Department of Corrections didn’t receive a single bid after it asked pharmaceutical companies to bid on providing the state with lethal injection drugs.

There are currently 81 inmates on Nevada’s death row but no pending execution orders. Unlike some other states, Nevada law mandates any executions be done by lethal injection. There are no other options.

Director James Dzurenda said the Purchasing Division sent out the bid Sept. 2 to 247 vendors nationwide and advertised the invitation in area newspapers.

As of October 4 when the bid closed, purchasing officials advised him no bids had been received.

“We are confident the Purchasing Division solicited thoroughly for vendors,” said Dzurenda. “Now we will work closely with the attorney general, the governor and Legislature to examine our options and decide the best course of action moving forward.”
