A series of storms sweeping into the area are expected to bring powerful winds and rain, with snow expected at higher elevations of the Sierra, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
A high wind warning is in effect for the greater Carson City, Carson Valley, Reno and Storey County region through 5 p.m. Friday.
A second round of strong winds is likely Saturday afternoon through Sunday, when a high wind watch will be in effect.
Southwest winds are expected at 20-35 mph with gusts to 65 mph. Gusts of up to 90 mph are possible in the foothills and wind-prone areas along Highway 395. Sierra ridge gusts may reach upwards of 110 mph.
The weather service said the winds are strong enough to damage trees, power lines and property, and that traffic could be affected.
Larger trucks and trailers are advised to avoid Highway 395 and consider alternate routes.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items such as furniture, trash cans and Halloween or yard decorations.
The weather service recommends having extra food and water and flashlights with spare batteries or candles on hand in the event of a power outage.
In addition to strong winds, rain is expected to push southward across the region Friday through Sunday. Wetter locations could receive two inches; for lower elevations, a shorter period of rain is likely with amounts less than a quarter of an inch.
Snow levels will be limited to higher elevations above 9,500 feet. Although snow isn’t expected at the valley floor, rainy conditions are expected to pick back up Saturday night.
The stormy conditions could continue into Monday morning, with wet roads possible for the morning commute, the weather service said.
