Early voting opens Saturday

General election early voting starts Saturday and goes until Nov. 4 at the Churchill County Administrative Complex Commission Chambers, suite 145, at 155 N. Taylor St.

Hours are Saturdays from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Monday to Friday from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Voters are encouraged to review and notate their mailed sample ballot beforehand to save time on location. Also the information on the mailing label will assist election workers in speeding up the voting process; workers won’t open your sample ballot.

“The current number of active registered voters is 13,116,” said Erin Montalvo with the Churchill County Clerk/Treasurer’s Office. “Applications are still being entered across the state so this number will fluctuate a bit due to deletions before we finalize it.”

Polling place assistance is available if needed. Every location has a voting machine to enlarge the screen and print the voter verifiable paper trail in extra large front. Audio voting technology is also available. Ask a worker if help is needed reading the ballot or operating the voting machine.

Voters will insert a voter card received on site into the voting machine and make their choices using the touch-screen voting machine. Selections will be available for review before casting the ballot.

Candidates for president are Darrell Castle, Independent; Hillary Clinton, Democrat; Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente; Gary Johnson, Libertarian; and Donald Trump, Republican.

Candidates for Senate are Catherine Cortez Mastro, Democrat; Tony Gumina; Joe Heck, Republican; Tom Jones, Independent, Tom Sawyer; and Jarrod Williams.

Candidates for the House of Representatives are Mark Amodei, Republican; H.D. “Chip” Evans, Democrat; John Everhart, Independent; and Drew Knight.

Candidates for State Assembly are Wendy “Rooster” Cochran; George Dini, Democrat; Justin Smith, Independent; and Robin Titus, Republican.

The candidate for District 1 County Commissioner is Harry (Bus) Scharmann, Republican. The candidate for District 2 County Commissioner is Carl Erquiaga, Republican.

The candidate for Supreme Court Justice Seat A is Jim Hardesty, and the candidate for Supreme Court Justice Seat E is Ron Parraguirre. The candidate for Court of Appeals Judge Department 1 is Jerry Tao; the candidate for Court of Appeals Judge Department 2 is Michael Gibbons; and the candidate for Court of Appeals Judge Department 3 is Abbi Silver.

Candidates for the University Board of Regents are Carol Del Carlo and Sara Lafrance.

Candidates for the State Board of Education are David Carter and Pat Hickey.

State Question Number 1 proposes prohibiting a person from selling or transferring a firearm to another person unless a federally-licensed dealer first conducts a federal background check on the potential buyer or transferee.

State Question Number 2 proposes allowing a person 21 years or older to purchase, cultivate, posses or consume a certain amount of marijuana as well as manufacture, transport, distribute or sell marijuana paraphernalia. There would also be a 15 percent tax on wholesale marijuana sales in addition to certain criminal penalties and marijuana cultivator, tester, distributor, supplier and retailer regulation and licensing.

State Question Number 3 proposes requiring the Legislature to provide by law for the establishment of an open, competitive retail electric energy market that would prohibit the granting of monopolies and exclusive franchises for the generation of electricity.

State Question Number 4 proposes exempting durable medical equipment, oxygen delivery equipment and mobility enhancing equipment prescribed for use by a licensed health care provider from any tax upon sale, storage, use or consumption of tangible personal property.

County Question Number 1 proposes the Churchill County Board of Commissioners enact an ordinance to impose from Jan. 1, 2017, to Dec. 31, 2026, that would result in annual increases in vehicle fuels tax based on the construction inflation rate. The annual increases would not exceed three cents, and the sole purpose would be to fund county road construction and maintenance.

Election Day hours on Nov. 8 are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. at the Fallon Convention Center at 100 Campus Way.

If an absentee ballot is desired, requests must be submitted in writing to the Clerk’s Office no later than Nov. 1 — ballots must returned by 7 p.m. on Election Day.
