Warming up to Flamenco, Mediterranean music

Some tickets are still available for the performance by the talented ensemble Las Migas, who will present an evening of Mediterranean and Flamenco music and dance tomorrow at the Oats Park Art Center.

They are unique among Spanish musical groups and have been hailed for their fascinating blend of styles that combine classic and contemporary rhythms with melodies that range from powerful and passionate to playful.

They cover a range of musical expressions from happy upbeat Latin sounds to pensive ballads and have developed devoted coterie of fans across Europe. The show here in Fallon is part of their first North American tour.

They’ll give an informal chat on their musical styles and influences at 3 p.m. in the Center’s Art Bar which is free and open to the public.

Doors to the performance will open at 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $17 for CAC members, $20 for non-members and can be picked up at Jeff’s Copy Express, ITT @ NAS Fallon or by calling Churchill Arts at 775-423-1440.


WRITERS HALL OF FAME

The Nevada Writers Hall of Fame honors Nevada’s finest writers and this year’s ceremony will feature two talented and well-known authors — Gailmarie Pahmeier and Willy Vlautin — on Nov. 8.

Pahmeier, who has read several times in Fallon, is currently serving as Reno’s first poet laureate, teaches in the creative writing program at UNR and her most recent collection of poems is “The Rural Lives of Nice Girls,” published by the Black Rock Press,

Willy Vlautin founded the band, Richmond Fontaine and is the author of several novels including “The Motel Life,” (which as made into a movie featuring Dakota Fanning and Emile Hirsch) “Northline,” and “Lean on Pete” which is currently in production as a film starring Steve Buscemi.

There will be a reception from 6 to 7 p.m. and the program, featuring readings by both writers, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Milt Glick Ballroom on the fourth floor of the Joe Crowley Student Union at UNR. Reservations should be made no later than November2.
