Western Nevada College Foundation is pleased to announce the addition of three new scholarships to benefit veteran students attending Western Nevada College (WNC). These scholarships, generously funded by Frontier Communications out of Gardnerville, are designed to encourage postsecondary education among the local veteran population.
“Western Nevada College is grateful to Frontier Communications and local manager, Jojo Myers for their incredible show of generosity. These scholarships will help honor our veterans while encouraging them to pursue higher education,” said Kevin Burns, WNC veterans resource center director. “The transition from military life can be full of challenges. These scholarships will help make life a little easier for three of our veterans.”
Frontier Communications holds a strong belief that supporting the military by hiring veterans is essential to successfully serving their customers. In 2015, the company hired over 375 new veteran employees nationwide.
“Frontier Communications prioritizes veteran applicants over all others,” said Myers, local manager for Frontier Communications. “That’s why these scholarships are so important to our company. This is a perfect way to contribute to our community while recognizing and honoring our company culture.”
Myers presented the check to WNC Foundation Director Niki Gladys, WNC Veteran’s Resource Center Director Kevin Burns and WNC President Chet Burton at the WNC Foundation’s Evening at the Ranch. The event, held at the Bonafede Ranch, celebrated Western Nevada College’s contributions to Douglas County.

WNC Foundation, founded in 1992, supports WNC by raising funds through employee giving campaigns, special events and community outreach. Over the past year, the foundation raised nearly $200,000 in student scholarship awards and gifted over $430,000 to the college to be used toward facility and program improvements. Veterans and others pursuing higher education are encouraged to apply for these and other scholarships with a simple application which can be found at www.wnc.edu/financial/scholarships-grants-loans. Scholarship applications for the 2017/2018 school year are now being accepted.
