State briefs: Gardnerville lawyer applies for Saitta’s Supreme Court seat

Gardnerville lawyer Michael King Powell is the first to apply for appointment to the Supreme Court seat vacated by the resignation of Nancy Saitta.

Powell, 68, primarily practices criminal law. He has appeared not only in Washoe and Douglas County courts but U.S. District Court, the 9th Circuit Court and U.S. Supreme Court.

He has lived in Nevada for 48 years.

The deadline for application to be considered for the appointment is today.

The applicants for the post will be reviewed and interviewed by a Bar Association committee with the three finalists then presented to Gov. Brian Sandoval who will make the final decision.

Gardner appointed to Commission on Construction Education

Gov. Brian Sandoval has appointed Robert Gardner of Gardner Engineering to the commission that distributes grant funds to education programs that teach construction skills and opportunities.

The Commission on Construction Education is a seven-member panel that distributes funding to K-12 schools, technical high schools, community colleges and other institutions that give students career opportunities in the construction industry.

Sandoval reappointed the other members of the board including Chairman Shawn Danoski, Ed Horan, Dale Lowery, David McElwain and Brian Paster. Kent Lay is also on the board, appointed by the Contractor’s Board.

The appointments run through July 1, 2019.
