Lady Wave tennis stays perfect; boys split

There’s no better girls tennis team in the region than Fallon right now.

The Lady Wave swept two Lake Tahoe schools last week to improve to 6-0 as the team enters the second half of its Northern 3A schedule.

Fallon dispatched South Tahoe, 13-5, and North Tahoe, 14-4, last week and faced Sparks on Tuesday and will entertain Incline on Thursday. Fallon defeated Incline 10-8 earlier this month.

Sarah Inglis and Melanie Nuckolls won their three singles matches while Jamie Bekiares went 1-1 and Ashby Trotter lost her only match. Inglis, Fallon’s No. 1 singles player, and Nuckolls, the team’s No. 2 player, each won 6-4, 6-1 and 6-2 over South Tahoe. Bekiares won 6-0 but dropped a 6-1 match while Trotter lost 6-0.

“Our singles players came out strong with wins in the first round,” Fallon girls coach Jessica Nuckolls said.

One doubles team remained unbeaten while another lost for the first time this season.

Fallon’s No. 2 team, Lana Quint and Paola Duenas, continued to stay perfect, winning all three matches, 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2. After Nuckolls moved Quint from singles to doubles during the season, the duo has meshed well.

“Lana started the season out as a singles player but once I matched here up with Paola against Truckee, they have become a mighty force,” she said.

The Lady Wave’s No. 1 team of Izzy Martinez and Kayla Bekiares won 6-1 and 6-0 before falling 6-4.

“This is their first loss of the season and they were not happy with it because they knew they could do better,” Nuckolls said of her No. 1 team. “But upsets like that make some people fight harder and that is what they did against North Tahoe on Thursday.”

Mikaela McCormick teamed with Delaney Young to win a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4), while McCormick and Brooklynn Whitaker dropped a 6-3 decision. Kiley Woolsey and Kate Dunkin lost a close one, 6-4.

Against North Tahoe, Fallon took advantage of the Tahoe school’s small lineup as it fielded only eight players compared to Fallon’s 15.

Inglis (6-2, 6-0, 6-1) and Nuckolls (6-0, 7-5, 6-1) each won all their matches while Jamie Bekiares went 2-1, winning 6-0 and 6-2 before dropping a 6-1 match.

Martinez and Kayla Bekiares, and Quint and Duenas were perfect in doubles play, but the No. 3 team dropped its matches. Martinez and Bekiares won 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, while Quint and Duenas won 6-4, 6-4 and 6-0.

McCormick and Whitaker lost 6-3, Kate Dunkin and Trotter lost 6-2, and Kiley Woolsey and Maycee Wadsworth lost 6-3.

Boys tennis splits with lake schools

Fallon scored only one point in last Tuesday’s match against South Tahoe but rebounded to defeat North Tahoe, 10-8, on Thursday. Fallon evened its record at 3-3 with Sparks (Tuesday) and Incline (Thursday) on the schedule for this week.

Myles Getto, the team’s No. 3 singles player, picked up the lone win, a 7-6 (7-3) tiebreaker victory as the Vikings won, 17-1. Getto’s two singles wins in the North Tahoe contest helped pace Fallon to the two-point team win.

Getto won 6-1 and 6-3 before losing 6-0, while the doubles team of Ryan Lords and Dylan Bowen won two of three (7-5, 7-5, 2-6). Fallon, though, swept the No. 3 doubles matches with Dylan Kubeny and Thomas Jamieson winning 6-0, 6-3 and 6-0. The No. 2 team of Compton Lords and Ben Jamieson won 6-3 but dropped 6-0 and 6-4 decisions.

Alex Perazzo and Trent Nuckolls each won one singles match with Perazzo taking a 6-2 victory and Nuckolls winning 7-5.
