A healthy art contest

The Art Center and Churchill Community Coalition are having a Healthy Lives Poster Contest that starts with a workshop on Thursday from 5-6:30 p.m. at the convention center.

Participants’ work will be used as a positive force in people’s lives to help support free, substance abuse programs. Art teachers will present at the workshop followed by an open forum about what represents healthy lives and time to create.

“Our whole concept is we work with groups throughout the community that are building the community,” said Patricia Sammons, executive director at The Arts Center, “and then working with them to build the arts and art programs. Art isn’t just something on paper. Anything you can create is art. That’s what we promote.”

The poster, which can be provided by the center, must be 20 by 30 inches and 3/16-inches thick. The image may be horizontal or vertical as well as multi-color, black and white or single color and done in paint, pastel, ink, pencil or crayon. Techniques may include dry brush, airbrush, scratchboard, paper collage, linoleum painting, crosshatch and pointillism. No photography or computer-generated art will be accepted.

The center will provide materials, including drawing plans, depending on what the artists want.

The juried contest will have prizes in each category, and there will be an awards ceremony open to the community at Fallon Theatres.

“It’s going to be spectacular,” Sammons said.

Individual entries (one per person) are $15, and family or team entries (one per family/team) of six people or less are $20. Each individual and family/team member must attend and participate in poster development at the center’s Sept. 29 workshop. The entry form and fee are due at this workshop.

Additional, optional workshops will be Oct. 14 and 25. All entries must be turned in by the end of the last workshop.

Entries become property of The Art Center and may also help develop other programs, workshops and fundraising at the center for its mission in promoting the arts and community.
