The Greenwave golf team took second place at home Monday, finishing behind the Spring Creek Spartans.
The match was close between first and second. As a team, the Greenwave completed the Fallon Golf Course with a 441, while Spring Creek finished 423. Elko’s team came in third 30 points behind Fallon, 471. Individually, Fallon’s Rey Plasse and Kelvin Cann each scored 81, Chance Wood — 86, Mike Richards — 94, Jace Harmon — 99 and Ethan Smith — 105.
Fallon coach Richard Evans said the scores were higher than he would prefer, but they are “on par” with where he feels they should be for this point in the year. With the season about half over, he said he’s happy with the team’s progress.
“I’m pretty pleased with where they are,” Evans said.
The coach also said he plans to have the team work on their short game during the practices leading up to their next tournament. He said chipping and putting are the big things that can make or break a match.
“So, we’ll be focusing on chipping and putting,” Evans said.
The Greenwave has 12 days before its next tournament. On April 19 the Wave travels to Elko, then to Spring Creek on April 20. Evans said the team has extensive experience with the Elko and Spring Creek golf courses.
“Everyone on the team has golfed there at least once,” he said.
Evans said the team should have an advantage because of the experience and feels it will be a good tournament.
The coach also stressed the importance of being ready to play in Spring Creek, since that’s where this year’s state tournament will be held.
