The Veterans of Foreign Wars recognized three teachers across the United States as their teachers of the year.

Fallon’s Steve Johnson represented educators from grades 9-12. Accompanying Johnson to New Orleans, was Mike Terry of Fallon’s VFW Post 1002. Terry, a retired Navy veteran, organizes the educator program for Fallon’s VFW post.

During his tenure as a teacher at Churchill County High School, Johnson has taken an active role in supporting the military and military men and women, many of whom have close ties to Churchill County.

Since he and his family moved to Fallon 31 years ago, Johnson has supported the military and recognized scores of students who have passed through his classroom doors and enlisted in one of the military branches.

Johnson was recognized in June as Nevada’s VFW Teacher of the Year.

Johnson said in May he was surprised of the selection along with two other national winners who represent the elementary- and middle-school divisions.
