Schools are out until the first week of January, and all government offices — federal, state, county and city — will be closed on Monday for Christmas.

Most businesses will be closed to celebrate the holiday including financial institutions. The Lahontan Valley News will be closed and will reopen on Tuesday.

American Legion Post 16, along with volunteers from Naval Air Station Fallon and the community, will prepare, package and deliver holiday dinners on Monday as part of the Meals on Wheels program. Later in the morning, the American Legion is offering free Christmas dinners for the community.

The Running Iron Cafe on 715 S. Taylor St., is hosting a pancake breakfast benefiting Toys for Tots on Saturday from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Bring in a new, unwrapped toy and breakfast is free, or if you aren’t much of a shopper, the cost is $5 and that will go to Toys for Tots. For information or reservations, call 775-423-7070. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Since the holiday falls on Monday, most area churches will be having Christmas-related programs on Sunday. Others will also have Christmas Eve and/or Christmas day services. Check with specific churches for their schedules.

For those staying close to home, the National Weather Service forecast for Fallon and the Reno-Carson City area is calling for mostly sunny skies through Tuesday with highs in the low-to-mid-40s and lows in the Lahontan Valley and Carson City in the teens and mid-20s in Reno. At Lake Tahoe, highs will range in the low-to-upper 40s with morning lows hovering in the upper teens and low 20s.
