Prep Roundup: Carson High girls win, boys lose

TRACY, Calif. — Lily Bouza and Lauren Lemburg combined for 40 points to lead Carson High’s girls basketball team to a 50-45 win over Enochs at the Tracy Tournament on Thursday night.

Bouza led the team with 23 points and Lemburg added 17. Bella Kordonowy had six points and 13 rebounds.

“We used our speed to attack the basket,” Carson coach Melissa Larsen said. “There were only a couple of times where we were outrebounded.”

Carson trailed 25-21 at the half, but the Senators continued to attack the basket. With 1:13 left in the game, Carson converted three drives to the basket, and that was the difference.

Carson returns to action Friday at 8 needing a win to make the finals.

Dayton falls

LOVELOCK — Dayton hit just 11-of-45 from the floor, missing many inside shots on its way to a 36-24 loss to Lovelock. Taryn Houston scored 14 points for Lovelock.

“We played pretty good on defense,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “I really think (Lovelock) is solid, well-balanced, well-coached team.

Abby Sikora led Dayton with 12 points.

“Abby is very consistent on defense and can get in position to score outside the perimeter for us on offense,” Frantz said. “She has really stepped up on her ball handling and has gained confidence on driving the lane.”

Tamia Powell and Hannah Coltrin each had 4 points and Powell had 5 rebounds and 7 steals while Coltrin grabbed 10 rebounds for the Dust Devils.

“I think we took a quarter too long to calm down and start taking care of the ball and once we started putting up points, we played much stronger,” Frantz said.

Falcons lose at tourney

ANTIOCH, Calif. — The Bentley School of Lafayette beat the Falcons, 44-19, on Thursday at the West Coast Jamboree.

Bentley opened the game on a 16-1 run.

The Falcons were led by Aleyna Gilson and Ruth Boogman with 5 points each. Kati Boogman added 11 rebounds.

Carson loses tourney opener

LIVERMORE, Calif. — Kimball outscored the Senators by 10 points in the first half, and maintained that lead the rest of the way in a 56-46 win over Carson in the first round of the Livermore Tournament.

Carson returns to action Friday at 5 in the consolation bracket.

“We played three good quarters and one not so good,” Carson coach Jordan Glover. “They were very athletic. They would beat 80 percent of the teams in Reno.

“We came out a little stagnant in the first quarter and they got a 10-point lead. It was even after that.  We got in some foul trouble. Trent (Robison) was in foul trouble and so was Jonny (Randall).”

Carson tied the game early in the second half at 32, but was unable to sustain the momentum.

Derek Barry led Carson with 19 points and Robison added 17.

Dayton wins

LOVELOCK — Dayton turned up its defensive effort in the second half to overcome a 33-27 halftime deficit on its way to a 62-56 win against Lovelock.

Trevor Burrows had 31 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals and Josh Pasaso added 16 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals for the Dust Devils.

The play of Chase Peterson (one block), Joey Martinez (five points, three blocks), Lance Peterson and Tyler Stolfich on defense was also key as Dayton held a strong three-point shooting Lovelock team to six three-pointers.

Sierra Lutheran edged

SPARKS — Sierra Lutheran fell just short in a 54-53 loss to Yerington in overtime. The game was tied 12-12 after one quarter and 26-26 at halftime before Sierra Lutheran took a 35-34 lead after three quarters. The game was tied 45-45 after regulation.

Zane Warkentin hit a three-pointer with 20 seconds left in overtime to pull Sierra Lutheran to within one point. Warkentin posted another double double with 17 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and three assists, Quinn Cummings scored eight points in the second quarter, Logan Schnizing had 12 rebounds, Luke Bonafede had seven rebounds and Kyman Berger added nine rebounds for the Falcons.

“The boys fought hard and came together at the end as a team and almost pulled out the win,” Sierra Lutheran coach Ben Walther said.

JV GIRLS

Dayton falls to Pershing County

Pershing County defeated Dayton, 54-34, on Thursday.

Kim Torres, despite being ill, lead the Dust Devils with 8 points and 4 rebounds.

Sam Cleland scored a season-high 7 points and added 4 steals.

The Dust Devils play South Tahoe on Tuesday.
