The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: Yes, this isn’t your father’s Jerry Tarkanian’s UNLV men’s basketball team, but it was still sweet to watch the University of Nevada run the Runnin’ Rebels’ off the court in a 104-77 thrashing on Wednesday at Lawlor Events Center.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson Tigersharks Matteas Klatt, Katarina Klatt and Nick Melsheimer for qualifying for the 2017 Pacific 14 and under Junior Olympics to be hosted by the Tigersharks March 10, 11 and 12 at the Carson Aquatic Facility.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson High School Robotics Team “Team Captain” team for taking home three awards after competing in the FIRST Tech Challenge Nevada State Championship Tournament Feb. 3-4, at the Northwest Career and Technical Academy in Las Vegas. The team claimed the Winning Alliance award, which qualified it to compete against 72 teams from 11 western states at the FTC West Super Regional in Tacoma, Wash., March 10-12. Team captain Allan Huntington, who has been on the team for four years, Henry Sturm, Nicholas Bowler, Nanami Duncan, Zachary Frewert, Stuart McEhleny, Luke Bowler, Rylan Fancher, Adelynn Puett, and Casanova Segura all contributed to the team.
