Community spotlight: Arnold wins global elite competition

Carson High graduate Mike Arnold won the men’s global elite competition with an 18-2.50 (5.55m) clearance at the National Pole Vault Summit at Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center Friday night.

Arnold is the first Nevada native to win this event. The mark was the best by an American indoors so far this year.

Empire Ranch looking

for senior golfers

Memberships are now available for the 2017 season for the Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Golf Club.

Applications may be obtained at the Empire Ranch Pro Shop. You must be at least 55 years old to join. The club has scheduled 35 weekly tournaments on Wednesday mornings, 10 of which are played at other local golf courses.

The first tournament is on March 8. The club has a variety of tournaments which include individual stroke play, team scrambles, best ball, stableford scoring and a club championship. All tournaments are separated into flights and handicapped, giving players an equal chance to win. The club dues are $50 which includes 2017 NNGA membership.

Super happenings

at Empire Ranch

Weather permitting, Empire Ranch is hosting a Super Bowl party and golf shotgun special on Feb. 5.

The golf portion of the event kicks off at 10 a.m., and for $35 you get 18 hols of golf, cart, range balls, and entrance to the party. The menu includes Luis’ barbecue ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, chicken wings, salad bar, soup of the day and desert.

Eagle Valley 7th VB Wins

Eagle Valley Middle School won its opening volleyball match, beating Carson Valley 25-11, 25-11. Emma Stagliano had 18 points, three aces, five assists, one kill and two digs, Caydee Farnworth had four points, two aces, four kills and three digs, Lilly Ralla had five kills and one point, Lizbeth Vega had six points and one ace, Athena Monterey had four points and one ace, Olivia Smith had six assists and Shannen Vonduering had one kill and one dig.
