Prep roundup: Douglas boys can’t hold lead; CHS girls fall

MINDEN — Brandon Concepcion scored nine of his 11 points in the fourth quarter to help Bishop Manogue rally for a key 51-45 Sierra League victory at Douglas Friday night.

Manogue (9-3 league, 14-8 overall) came back from an early 15-point deficit and scored eight unanswered points late in the fourth quarter to pull out a win that moved the Miners into a tie for second-place with Carson in the league standings.

Douglas (4-8, 5-16) surged to a 16-1 lead inside the game’s opening five minutes and connected on four 3-pointers in the first quarter overall, three by Ryan Barnes. The Tigers led 19-6 at the end of one quarter.

Barnes finished with 14 points to lead the Tigers offensively. Tre Jackson added 13, including three 3-pointers, and Dalton Davis seven.

Aidan Cantwell had a double-double for the Miners with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Brevon Bansuelo contributed 12 points. Concepcion hit a jumper to put Manogue on top to stay, 45-43 with 2:08 to go, and then scored on a layup to extend the lead to 50-45 with 38 seconds left. Sophomore Josh Rolling came off the bench and grabbed 10 rebounds (four offensive) to help spark the Miners.

The lead changed hands five times in the final minutes.

VC boys roll

COLEVILLE — Virginia City rolled to a 76-19 win over Coleville to improve to 7-1 in league. Colt Hess scored 20 points, Tommy Redican and Tanner Uken each added 12 points and Jake Conners had nine points for the Muckers, who host Loyalton at 4 p.m. today.

Dayton loses

FALLON — The Dayton boys basketball team lost a physical battle against Fallon, falling 59-47 on Friday.

“They just pounded the heck out of us,” Dayton assistant coach Kevin Ply said.

Jonathan Ply had two field goals and went 11-of-13 from the foul line to score 15 points for Dayton. The two players who guarded Ply combined to commit nine fouls.

Trevor Burrows scored 14 points and Brenden Thomas added eight points for the Dust Devils, who trailed 34-30 going into the four quarter.

“They’re fighting,” coach Ply said. “They’re not giving up.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Galena routs Carson

RENO – The Galena girls basketball team built a 15-point first-quarter lead and coasted to an easy win, snapping the Senators’ three-game win streak, beating Carson 62-28 Friday.

Carson won the earlier match-up between the teams, 45-41.

Josie Peck led Galena with 22 and Kristin Farrell added 12.

Freshman Bella Kordonowy led Carson with 12, nine coming in the first half.

The final quarter was played with a running clock.

Falcons edge Pyramid Lake

Seven different players scored as Sierra Lutheran edged Pyramid Lake 28-17 in a Division 1A game.

Aleyna Gilson led the Falcons with six points.

Manogue beats Douglas

MINDEN — Katie Turner, Malia Holt and Kenna Holt combined to score 59 points as Bishop Manogue remained unbeaten in league play with an 84-17 win at Douglas.

Turner led all scorers with 23, while Malia Holt added 20 and Kenna Holt 16 for Manogue (12-0 league, 18-2 overall). They combined to sink nine 3-pointers. Hannah Reviglio also scored 11 for the Miners.

Hannah Carr scored seven points to lead Douglas (4-8, 7-14), which now stands in a three-way tie for third-place with Damonte Ranch and Galena in league play. Harmony Laney hit a 3-pointer for the Tigers.

Dayton falls

FALLON — Dayton had trouble handling Fallon’s press in a 67-18 loss. Elora Neep led the Dust Devils with nine points on three three-pointers and Kristina Mason added four points and two rebounds.

Galena holds off CHS

RENO – Carson made a brief second-half surge, but still dropped a 54-43 decision to Galena Friday.

Jackson Sayre led Carson with nine and Christian Ortega added eight.

Carson fell to 9-10.

FRESHMAN BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson wins

Carson avenged a two-point loss to Galena in the first meeting, opening with a 10-0 run on its way to a 51-43 win.

Jonny LaPlante played well on both ends of the court and led the team with 10 points off 5 steals.

Bradley Maffei had another strong game with eight points and six assists.

Sethro Griffith and Camdyn Meikrantz added seven apiece as 11 of the 12 players scored for Carson.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fallon topples Dayton

DAYTON — Despite nine points apiece from Tamia Powell and Julie Rogacs, the Dust Devils dropped a 51-30 decision in a 3A game.
