The Circurious: Lee and Ryland’s grand exhibition of bareback riders, ground and lofty tumblers and buffalo tamers will appear in Carson. This is one of the best circuses that ever traveled on the Pacific Coast. Kennedy, the clown, is a vastly funny fellow and highly commended — a must-go show — and take the children.

The toll road nuisance: Between Carson and Bodie there were so many toll gates that there was not room enough to swing them open all at once. There are fewer now, but those few are an imposition and should be abated.

The armless dressmaker: Of all the shows on the street during the carnival, the Armless Dressmaker is voted as the greatest novelty. Loretta from California was born without arms. She was possessed of great intelligence and learned to sew with her feet. She can thread a needle with her toes and cut cloth with the scissors.

100 Years Ago

Whiskey offender: Carson City — George Clarke was taken into custody for selling whiskey to soldiers. The penalty is a year imprisonment and a fine. (Free Press)

Nuke experiment: The safety and reliability of the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile was tested at the Nevada Test Site. Testing used 160 pounds of chemical explosives to bombard pieces of plutonium in order to determine how the chemical element reacts with age. This test is one in a series planned from nuclear weapons labs at Los Alamos, New Mexico and Lawrence Livermore.
