The local blood inventory has dipped significantly, so to continue meeting patient needs United Blood Services is aiming to collect at least 1,000 donations in Northern Nevada by July 4.

United Blood Services says the long holiday weekends such as the Fourth of July make blood collection a challenge, especially during the summer.

All blood types are important, but O negative blood types are especially needed. O negative blood types can help patients of any blood type, especially during emergency situations when blood must be readily available to help patients quickly.

Volunteers who donate at the United Blood Services donor centers in Carson City, Reno and Sparks or area mobile blood drives through Sept. 5 qualify to win a Harley-Davidson Iron 883 motorcycle from Chester’s Reno Harley-Davidson. Additionally, donors will receive a limited-edition “Give with Passion” T-shirt featuring Harley-Davidson-inspired artwork.

Donors must be at least 16, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height/weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger, and donors who are 16 and 17 must have signed permission from a parent or guardian.
