The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Nevada State Railroad Museum for re-opening to the public free of charge on Saturday after suffering from extensive flood damage. While the museum isn’t up and running at full-scale, yet, it’s well on it’s way to doing so. Again thanks to all those who made the re-opening of the railroad museum possible.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all the schools and organizations who participated in Reading Week last week to promote literacy.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all of the students from Carson, Eagle Valley and Churchill County middle schools for their presentation on the importance of digital education at the Legislature last week.

WOODEN NICKEL: To to the powers-that-be that didn’t make it possible for the Nevada-Colorado State men’s basketball game for the Mountain West Conference regular season title to effectively be shown on regular television. Instead the game was basically shown via the internet on ESPN3, the “trifecta.” The decision not to televise Nevada-Colorado State was basically made last summer and that’s a policy that obviously has to change.
