Students propose Nevada schools teach consent, other laws

The Nevada Youth Legislature is proposing public high schools teach students about sexual consent and the ramifications of breaking certain laws.

Senate Bill 108 would require secondary education curricula to include the legal definition of sexual consent and how to comply with it.

The bill would also mandate public instruction cover sexual assault, domestic violence, sending or receiving sexual images, driving under the influence, stalking and property destruction.

High schoolers on the nationally acclaimed student panel say people under age 18 frequently violate those laws.

Henderson-area student Olivia Yamamoto says informing young adults about law and punishment would deter more people from committing the crimes.

Another student member, Spencer Lang says the bill would give school districts discretion to decide how much class time to spend on criminal law.
