For the first time together, Carson City and Douglas County are teaming up as one to participate in this year’s Relay for Life event at Mills Park on Saturday.
Since February, $31,502 has been raised and at least 150 people are registered to participate, and 34 teams.
The main goal is to reach $55,000 before the event, however, Event Coordinator Mary Bowers believes participants will reach their goal. Tonight, the co-op team is holding a Bank Night to turn in remaining donations.
Contributions from the local community made a difference, she said.
“Community involvement has been amazing,” Bowers said. “We want to pull all communities together for these events and unite a different aspect of people.”
Bowers said the county co-op team held an event Sunday at Eagle Valley Golf Course, made possible by the Legislature. Bowers said the Legislature chose Relay to help fund raise, which estimated $4,200 at the golf tournament.
The event kicks off with Bowers and Mayor Bob Crowell as keynote speakers. Crowell will lead the Survivor-Caregiver Lap with purple ribbons, followed by team laps.
Bowers said activities and themed laps will proceed all day, including a Polka Walk and Open Walking. A balloon release involving survivors begins at 3:45 p.m.
The Salvation Army will be serving fresh soups, as each purchase will be donated to Relay.
Although the date for Relay is coming up, Bowers said more community events to raise money is already in the works for summer.
The official annual golf tournament is scheduled for June 24 at Empire Ranch Golf course, with 18 holes for participants.
On July 8, Sheldon Racing and Fabrication is hosting a memorial car show in honor of those who died from cancer.
About a week after, July 14 and 15, the co-op county team will host a Christmas in July a craft fair. Sierra Lutheran High School will be holding the event at its gym.
Bowers said the co-op team is still looking for local crafters to vend at the event.
“With Douglas being on board this year, we’re trying to get multiple communities connected,” she said. “The more that are involved, the more that will come out for Relay.”
