Area businesses featured in award-winning mining series

Golden Productions, an award-winning video production company based in Reno, has been awarded both a Telly in the 38th Annual Telly Awards competition and a Gold Communicator Award for its video series “Nevada Mining — From Pickaxe to GPS.”

Carson City and Silver City area residents, Comstock Mining, Art Wilson Gypsum and Bruce Holmgren from the Bureau of Mining Regulation and Reclamation Nevada Mining Bureau are featured in the series.

More than 13,000 entries from around the globe were submitted for this year’s Telly awards. The Communicator Award is a leading international awards program.

“Nevada Mining” is a four-part series that premiered on KNPB, the Northern Nevada PBS affiliate in April 2016. The documentary series covers the storied history of the Silver rush in Nevada up through the modern industry Nevada mining has become today.

The series was shot over the course of 11 months in several counties across Nevada. It was written and directed by Dennis and Gabe Golden. Funding was provided by the Nevada Mining Association.

The Goldens, assisted by videographers Alex Muench and Jon Gay, shot more than 100 hours of video and 60 people interviewed for the series.

“It’s truly astonishing how much mining has changed in Nevada in the past 150 years. It has become such a high-tech industry and that is something that many people don’t realize,” said Dennis Golden. “The more miles we covered over the course of filming the series, the more we discovered how far modern mining has transformed into an amazingly efficient, highly computerized, safe and environmentally conscious industry today.”

Golden Productions specializes in documentaries and online promotional videos and marketing. They handle all aspects of production including research, interviews, direction script writing, camera, and editing. The company was previously awarded four Telly and four Gold Communicator Awards for its work on the PBS series, “Stewards of the Rangeland.” The ranching series become the most award-winning series in KNPB’s history.

The Telly Awards was founded in 1979 to honor excellence in local, regional and cable TV commercials. Non-broadcast video and TV program categories were soon added. Today, the Telly is one of the most sought-after awards by industry leaders, from large international firms to local production companies and ad agencies.

Founded over two decades ago, the Communicator Awards is the leading international awards program recognizing big ideas in marketing and communications. It’s sanctioned and judged by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts, an invitation-only group consisting of top tier professionals from acclaimed media, communications, advertising, creative and marketing firms. The awards honor work that transcends innovation and craft providing winners recognition they deserve and their work is highly regarded by their peers in the industry.
