Prep roundup: All-star game gives 3 Senators one final shot

It was your typical senior all-star game — a lot of points, no defense and players dunking and often missing.

For three Carson High seniors — Tez Allen, Jayden DeJoseph and Gereat Rauh — it was their final game at Morse Burley Gym.

Unofficially, Allen (13) and DeJoseph (13) scored in double figures, but it was Bishop Manogue’s Aiden Cantwell’s jump shot that carried the Blue squad to a 110-109 win over the White squad Tuesday night.

“It’s crazy,” Allen said in between hugging his teammates for the night and members of the White squad. “Realizing I’m going to be moving on with the next phase of my life. This was a fun game. I’ve known most of these guys since I was really young.”

“There was no defense,” said DeJoseph, who recently signed with William Jessup, an NAIA school near Sacramento. “Everybody was just trying to dunk. It was fun playing the game, though.”

Allen himself missed three or four dunks during the contest, and he was good-natured about it when he got ribbed by teammates and opponents alike. Spanish Springs’ Josh Prizina of the White squad also missed several dunks.

The defense actually showed up on the last White possession of the game after Cantwell had given the Blue squad the lead with 23.3 seconds left. Blue players swarmed and the White squad missed its last shot of the game.

“Once we got the lead we tried to keep it,” said Allen, who had a basket that gave the Blue a 104-100 lead inside the final two minutes.

Allen had a nice seven-point stretch in the first half that enabled the Blue squad to build a 31-22 halftime lead. DeJoseph also had a seven-point surge midway through the second half to keep his team close.

“I wasn’t really warmed up (early),” DeJoseph said.

GIRLS

Blue 68, White 46

Anhelica Shamrock was a one-girl wrecking crew, scoring 27 points to lead the Blue to an easy win over the outmanned White squad.

The White roster had four Manogue players, but only Maddie Camacho and Katie Turner played, and they didn’t show up until the middle of the first half because of a school function. By that time, the Blue squad had built a double-digit lead.

Shayla Carrier and Malia Holt were listed on the roster, but never made an appearance at the game.

Drue Chapman led the White squad with 15 points and Turner added 12.

BASEBALL

Blue Jays win opener

Reese White allowed just three hits over 6.2 innings, and his teammates gave him a six-run cushion in the first four innings in a 6-2 Carson win over the Damonte Ranch Rebels on Monday in its summer opener at Ron McNutt Field.

White, a right-hander, struck out three. Gryphon Matthies got the final out of the game.

Carson took a 3-0 lead in the second on a single by Landon Truesdale, a triple by Colby Zemp, a single by Teigen Key, a single by Kyle Glanzmann and an error.

Key drove in a run in the third to make it 4-0, and a sacrifice fly by Jared Barnard and a run-scoring single by Kahle Good made it 6-0 in the fourth.

Damonte Ranch scored twice in the seventh.

Carson finished with six hits — one each by Glanzmann, Key, Good, Truesdale, Joe Tonino and Zemp.

Carson hosts McQueen on Thursday at 7 p.m.
