Swimming to the top

The boys’ 200-yard freestyle medley team led the Greenwave at the state meet in Carson City, taking third with a time of 1:57.16.

The team was comprised of Kendall Rogers, Ruben Alanis, Christian Nemeth and Dylan Millsap.

The boys’ relay teams also finished eighth in the 400-yard freestyle, 4:12.01 (Lance Turnham, Kobe Abe, Rogers and Millsap) and seventh in the 200-yard freestyle (Millsap, Alanis, Abe and Nemeth), 1:44.90. The girls’ relay team (Ashby Trotter, Jennifer Marshall, Amber Revels and Kaelehn Nemeth) placed fifth in the 400-yard freestyle relay, 4:38.04.

Fallon coach Ken Grimes noted the boys’ relay team went into the meet slated in fifth, but pulled ahead and improved its time.

“That was nice,” he said. “The boys metaled, that was pretty cool.”

Nemeth placed sixth in the boys’ 50-yard freestyle, 24.51. He also placed seventh in the 100-yard freestyle, 55.14. Revels placed seventh in the 100-yard butterfly, 1:19.94, and eighth in the 500-yard freestyle, 7:09.09. The pair were the main Fallon swimmers in individual events.

Both teams placed ninth of 18 teams at the meet.

Looking back at the meet, Grimes said most swimmers were either consistent with their last record or improved their time in an event.

The coach said he’s proud of the first-year seniors who came to the team this year.

He said about half the team was made up of seniors and many of them started this year. He said they all showed big improvements from the start of the year.

“I’m really happy they were on the team,” he said. “I wish I’d had them all four years.”

The coach said he didn’t know of any seniors who planned to swim in college, though he hopes they’ll keep swimming casually or with a club. He recalled some of the seniors he had coached for years, even back when they were doing club swimming.

“I’ve known them quite a while; I’ll miss them, I’m going to miss them a lot,” Grimes said.

The coach added he has hopes for a good future of the swim team. He said there are strong swimmers who will be able to come back next season; he has also heard possible interest from students who will be starting their freshman year.

However, the coach also noted there was plenty of competition of different teams for spring sports.

“They get a lot of options, coming into high school,” Grimes said. “I’m hoping we get them. I’m not counting my chickens before they’re hatched.”
