The Nevada Highway Patrol is gearing up for seatbelt enforcement over the Thanksgiving holidays.

The program is called Joining Forces and NHP officials say they will be actively looking for drivers and vehicle occupants not wearing seatbelts and children not properly secured.

In Nevada, however, not wearing a seatbelt isn’t a “primary” offense. That means the trooper has to have a different reason or violation in order to stop a driver, then discover the seatbelt violation.

Funding for the additional patrols over the holidays is provided by a Joining Forces grant from Nevada’s Office of Public Safety. The purpose of the program is to reduce injuries and crashes through statewide enforcement of DUI, speeding, distracted driving and seat belt violations. This year’s effort will run through Dec. 2.
