Prep Roundup: Sierra Lutheran boys win big

FORESTHILL, Calif. — Zane Warkentin and Kyman Berger combined for 32 points to lead Sierra Lutheran to a 69-57 win over host Foresthill at the Foresthill Wildfire Classic on Thursday night.

Sierra Lutheran, 2-0, faces Rio Vista today at 8 p.m.

Warkentin led the way with 19 points, eight rebounds, five steals and seven assists, and Berger added 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

“Tonight was a physical game,” SL coach Ben Walther said. “We were quite sloppy on the offensive end to begin the game, but we started to find our rhythm in the second (quarter). The defense was playing with good intensity and we got some well-timed stops to end some runs.”

Thomas Mellum contributed nine points and four boards, while Logan Schinzing tallied eight points and pulled down nine rebounds. Nathan Waite led the team in rebounding with 10.


Folsom 79, Douglas 19

RENO — The Tigers were no match for Folsom at the Wild West Shootout at Bishop Manogue.

Folsom is 2-0, and has outscored opponents by a combined 86 points.

VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL

Carson routed in opener

SPARKS — The Carson High girls basketball team opened its season with a 35-19 loss to Elko on the first day of the High Sierra Classic at Spanish Springs.

Carson plays Spring Creek today at 6 at Reno High School.

“We didn’t execute on offense,” Carson coach Melissa Larsen said. “We struggled shooting. We could not make a shot.”

Trinity Beard had four points and Bella Kordonowy had three. Nobody else scored more than two.


JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson 77, Lowry 53

Nate Smothers scored 25 points to lead the Senators to an easy win over the Buckaroos on Thursday at Morse Burley Gym.

Carson opens its league season Tuesday against Spanish Springs.
