Prep Roundup: McQueen uses big innings to beat Carson High baseball

It was feast or famine for McQueen on Saturday.

The Lancers only scored in two of the seven innings, but made their production count in a 12-2 victory against Carson High at Ron McNutt Field.

The Senators honored Timmy Jones before the game. Jones died in late November from injuries suffered in an auto accident on Nov. 9. The team has flown a blue flag on the centerfield flag pole all season with No. 3 below the initials of TJ.

McQueen scored five in the second off CHS starter Jared Barnard, and then added seven in the seventh against Carson relievers. It was the second straight ineffective outing by the relief staff.

Carson had cut a 5-0 deficit to 5-2 with runs in the second and fourth innings. The Senators managed just six hits off McQueen starter Tucker Scozzafava, who didn’t allow an earned run in his six-inning stint.

Kahle Good went 2-for-4 and Abel Carter, Joe Tonino, Landon Truesdale, Delsin Roberts and Colby Zemp added a hit each. Zemp had Carson’s only RBI.

Carson starts a two-game series Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. against Galena. The teams meet at Carson on Thursday at the same time.

Dayton sweeps DH from Lowry

WINNEMUCCA — After a disappointing loss on Friday, Dayton bounced back to sweep Saturday’s doubleheader at Lowry.

Dayton took the opener, 7-3, and then scored 11 in the fifth inning of the second game en route to a 16-4 victory.

Dayton scored two in the second, one in the third and tacked on four in the fifth to take control. Trevor Burrows scattered seven hits and fanned seven. He helped himself at the plate with two doubles.

Tyler Stolfich went 2-for-4 with a homer, single and two RBI. Cole Purdy had two hits and an RBI. Zach Woitas drove in two runs.

In the second game, it was the Justin Schmidt Show. Schmidt doubled twice, tripled and singled en route to an eight-RBI game.

Burrows, Stolfich and Woitas all had two hits.

Isaac Von Schoff went the distance, allowing just four hits and one earned run. He struck out 14 and walked two.

Dayton girls 3rd at Fernley

FERNLEY — Dayton High’s girls track team produced a third-place finish at Friday’s Fernley Invitational.

The Dayton boys were fifth with 64.5 points.

Ashley Mason won the triple jump (34-10) and long jump (16-6). Rebecca Mason won the 400 (63.80) and was third in the high jump (4-10). The Masons teamed with Sydney Strickler and Macie Callan to win the 800 relay (1:49.24). Callan was third in the 200 at 28.33. The 3200 relay quartet of Kaeli Barwig, Emma Heusser, Hannah Coltrin and Grace Wells were third in 11:59.89. The 1600 relay team of the Masons, Strickler and Wells were third in 4:20.17. Wells was fourth in the 100 hurdles in 18.55.

Jeffrey Walker was the only individual winner for the Dayton boys, winning the pole vault in 11-6 and placing fourth in the 300 hurdles in 44.42. David Delfin was second in the discus at 133-9 and fourth in the shot with a PR of 38-7. Peter Miklich was third in the long jump at 18-4 and third in the pole vault. Michael Rhoades was fourth in the triple jump at 36-3. The 1600 and 3200 relay squads were third. Micklich, Rhoades, Zane Weston and Sunny Rojas ran a 1:40 in the shorter relay and 3:53.44 in the longer relay.

Pradere 2nd in Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. — Abigail Pradere ran a 4:46.22 to finish second in her heat at the 1500 at the Oregon Relays at Hayward Field on Saturday.

Pradere was edged by Valor Christian freshman Taylor Whitfield by .04.

Ashley Britt ran a 49.11 and finished fifth in her 300-meter hurdles heat.

Carson boys 9th at Northwest Invite

RENO — Led by Tanner Kalicki, Hunter Rauh and the 1600 and 3200 relay squads, the Senators were ninth at Saturday’s Northwest Invite at McQueen High School.

Kalicki was third in the triple jump with a PR of 41-11 1/2. He was seventh in the high jump at 5-9 and 22nd in the long jump at 18-6. Rauh was fourth in the 800 with a 2:03.90, and he ran a leg on the 1600 relay team that finished fourth in 3:39.73. Darryll Heyward, Gryphon Matthies and Dominic Martinez also ran on the team. The 3200 quartet of Paxton Spence, Jayson Legott, Ethan Byasse and Zach Sever were fourth in 8:47.82. Gabe Gabica was seventh in the pole vault at 12-feet.

The girls squad was 13th, but it was without Abigail Pradere, Rheanna Jackson and Ashley Britt, all of whom were at the Oregon Relays.

Alyssa Rowe was second in the shot with a PR of 33-9 1/2 and Abbey Paulson was fifth in the triple jump with a season best of 34-0 1/2. Blanca Sosa was sixth in the 1500 at 5:08.17 and Amanda Schulz was sixth in the discus at 99-5. Gabriela Fernandez was eighth in the 800 at 2:32.16, a season-best effort.

Buckaroos sweep Dayton

WINNEMUCCA — The Dust Devils managed just five hits in a doubleheader loss to Lowry on Saturday.

Lowry won the opener 4-0, and then used a 13-run third inning to produce a 15-1 mercy rule victory in the second game.

Amanda Woitas pitched well in the opener, allowing just two earned runs in seven innings. She struck out one and walked three. Marissa Hein, Tamia Powell and Julie Rogacs doubled for Dayton.

In the second game, Aleea Howe’s solo homer accounted for Dayton’s only run. Hein contributed a single.
