Track teams finish 6th at McQueen, host final meet

As the page turns to the second half of the season, the Greenwave track and field team finished sixth in both the boys and girls divisions at the Northwest Invite on Saturday at McQueen.

The Fallon boys, behind two record-breaking performances in the relays, scored 57 points to finish sixth and the highest non-4A team while the Lady Wave finish with 34 points to lead the non-4A schools, as well.

Fallon hosts its final meet of the season today with the Conclave of Awesomeness at 1 p.m. at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex.

The relay team of seniors Drake Copley and Broder Thurston, and juniors Reid Clyburn and Colton Peterson smoked the competition in both the 4x100 and 4x200 races. The quartet not only won both races but they shattered the school record, which were both broken by the same four in last year’s regional championship. The team won the 4x100 in 43.69 seconds — the only team to break the 44-second barrier — and then won the 4x200 by almost a full second, clocking in at 1:31.09.

Peterson, Copley and Clyburn also medaled in their individual races. Peterson won the 200-meter dash in 22.78 and Copley was fifth in the 100 in 11.46. Copley also finished fourth in the 200 in 23.18, a personal best, and Clyburn was eighth in 300 hurdles in 43.56 and ninth in the 110 hurdles in 17.13, a season best. Peterson finished seventh in the 400 in 54.38 followed by Zeke Washington in eighth with a personal-best 54.39.

J.R. Demillo led Fallon in the distance by placing 14th in the 800 in 2:11.42.

Both the 4x400 and 4x800 teams finished seventh. Trevor East, Angelo Vann, Demillo and Washington finished the 4x400 in 3:43.23, and Bryan Ugalde, William Dick, Daniel Tapia and Demillo finished the 4x800 in 9:09.56.

In the field events, East and Bryan Duenas led the jumping crew. East scored a personal best to place fifth in the triple jump at 40 feet, 8 inches, followed by Duenas’ 39-6 for a season best and eighth place. Thurston finished 10th at 38-7. East and Duenas finished 13th and 15th, respectively, in the long jump at 19-2 and 19-1.

Jacob Weber finished 16th in the pole vault at 9-6 and 33rd in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 33-11.5. Micah Whitaker finished 20th in the discus with a personal-best 112-4.

Kyndal Collins, Allie Lister, Sierra Hickox, Brynlee Shults and Tiffany Sorensen powered the Lady Wave to a strong performance.

Collins continued to make her case as one of the best sprinters by placing fourth in the 100 in 13.24 and seventh in the 200 in 27.47 with both times being personal bests. Sorensen finished seventh in both the shot put and discus, throwing a personal-best 29-5.25 in the shot put and 98-10 in the discus. Lister had the best vault of her career, clearing 9 feet, to finish seventh in pole vault and Hickox was fourth in the triple jump at 34-1, a personal best.

Shults had her best day this season in the pits, jumping 33-6.5 in the triple for sixth and 15-1 for ninth in the long jump. Hickox followed in 10th with a season-best 14-8.5 and Aisha Sharron finished eighth in the triple at 32 feet. Sharron also cleared 4-7 for 10th in the high jump and Chelsea Clevenger was 10th in the shot put at 28-0.75, a personal best.

Shelby Hickox finished ninth in the 300 hurdles with a season-best 52.45 and both 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams finished eighth. Collins, Shults, Sharron and Sierra Hickox finished the 4x100 race in 52.65, while Vera Vaz, Hailey Guerrero, Fiona White and Kylie Dochtermann finished the 4x200 in 2:06.39. Jordyn and Mayla Dahl, Makayle Mathisen and Savannah Robinson finished ninth in the 4x800 relay in 11:33.52.
