The chance to be featured on billboards across the state is up for grabs to area students who submit in the 2nd annual Nevada Fire Prevention Week poster contest.
This year’s campaign, “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere,” focuses on three critical steps for reducing the likelihood of having a fire and how to escape safely in the event of one.
“LOOK” for places fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them.
“LISTEN” for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home and where everyone should meet.
“LEARN” two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.
The categories are Elementary, 5th-6th grades; Middle School; and High School.
Schools will submit entries to area fire departments, which will choose the winning entries and send them to the Nevada State Fire Marshal by Sept. 14.
Winners at the state level will be selected on Sept. 18 in advance of Fire Prevention Week.
State winners will be featured on billboards statewide and receive recognition plaques.
