Fall semester brings about changes at WNC Fallon campus

A handful of changes and nervous excitement await students as they make final preparations for fall semester at Western Nevada College in Fallon.

When classes begin on Aug. 27, students will be greeted by new campus and outreach director Holly O’Toole, expanded course offerings, a new counselor, the introduction of Latino and Native American cohorts, and more.

Among the expanded course offerings for fall semester are Social Work 101 and Education 201.

Growth also continues in the Nursing program after being reinstated in 2016. After graduating its first class of nurses since the program was reinstated, there are eight second-year students and 11 students enrolled in the first-year cohort for fall semester.

Food Services Program to Launch

To accommodate the busy schedules of everyone on campus, coffee shop services will be available on campus this fall.

“This will give students, faculty and staff much-needed food choices during the week,” O’Toole said. “We encourage the community to come and try it as well.”

Students Look Forward to Wildcat Wednesday

The Associated Students of Western Nevada, WNC’s student governing body, has planned activities on campus to help students make new friends, learn more about their campus and become involved in activities that interest them.

On the Fallon campus, students will be treated to Wildcat Wednesday on Sept. 5. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Piñon Building there will be lawn games, a photo booth and food from Firehouse Subs. Students will also have the opportunity to meet and join student government.

Campus Welcomes New Counselor

The Fallon campus has added Wylecia Johnson will work with students to help them achieve their academic goals. She previously worked for Olympic College in Bremerton, Wash. Johnson has a master’s degree in Career Counseling, as well as experience working in higher education as an academic adviser, counselor and program specialist in Olympic College’s Counseling Office and Career Center.

“She brings a welcome energy and passion to our campus,” O’Toole said.

The Community Education, which thrived during the summer with a 167 percent increase in students, will continue to diversify its offerings during the fall.
