Greenwave enters 2018 with wins

The Greenwave boys basketball team had a great New Year’s weekend at the Lindhurst tournament, claiming two wins in three games against the California teams.

On Thursday, the Greenwave defeated the Capuchino Mustangs 80-73. Fallon took the lead in the first quarter, pulling ahead for a 7-point lead, 23-16. The Mustangs outscored Fallon in the second, though the Greenwave stayed ahead until halftime, 41-36.

The second half was close. The Greenwave stayed ahead in the third quarter, but both teams scored the same, 63-56. The final quarter was dead even, allowing the Greenwave to take the win.

Friday’s game against the Central Valley Falcons was another win, 54-42. Fallon’s victory was assured in the first half — they dominated the first quarter, 24-11, and outscored Central Valley by 10 points in the second, 42-19.

The Falcons improved in the second half, scoring one point over Fallon in the third and 10 in the fourth.

Wednesday’s game against Mira Loma was Fallon’s only loss, 80-73. The Matadors outscored the Greenwave by 12 in the first quarter, 22-10. Fallon outscored Mira Loma in the second quarter, but still trailed at halftime, 37-33.

Fallon outscored Mira Loma in the third, 57-55 to the Matadors. In the final quarter, however, Mira Loma was able to hold on for the win.

Elijah Jackson led the Greenwave in scoring with 55 points over all three games, from 4 three-pointers and seven free throws. Christian Nemeth was another top scorer with 29 points from 5 free throws. Nemeth was also a defensive leader, claiming 22 rebounds; Jackson was just behind him with 21 and Trey Rooks had 19.

The games were team efforts where most of the players made multiple baskets.

Fallon travelled to Fernley Tuesday for their first game of 2018. They travel to Dayton on Friday, then host Lowry on Saturday.
