Prep Roundup: Short-handed Carson High girls fall to Manogue

RENO — It was a double loss for an already short-handed Carson High girls basketball team.

Bishop Manogue played all 16 of its players and cruised to a 67-46 win over the Senators, who lost Bella Kordonowy to a significant knee injury in the first half.

The extent of Kordonowy’s injury isn’t known. She left the Primm Family Gymnasium on crutches Friday night. Carson played with just seven players in the second half, as Lauren Lemburg sat out her second consecutive game with an illness.

“The first four minutes we were intimidated because of Manogue,” Carson coach Melissa Larsen said. “After that we started to play basketball. I thought Haley (Garver) played well. She did a good job of attacking the basket.”

Garver finished with 14 followed by Lily Bouza with 12 and Abbey Paulson with 11.

Manogue took control early, scoring eight straight to open the game and finishing the opening quarter with eight straight en route to a 19-4 lead.

Manogue extended the lead to 35-15 at halftime. Kenna Holt had 13 of her game-high 21 in the opening 16 minutes. Manogue coach Craig Holt played his roster liberally throughout the game.

Douglas 45, Damonte Ranch 34

MINDEN — Hannah Carr and Ashlynn Campbell combined to score 23 points for Douglas in its 45-34 Sierra League win against Damonte Ranch.

Douglas (3-5 league, 6-12 overall) surged to a 14-3 lead at the end of one quarter. Damonte Ranch (3-5, 5-8) pulled to within 21-18 at halftime, however, the Tigers never relinquished their lead.

Carr scored 13 points and Campbell 10 to lead Douglas offensively. They scored back-to-back field goals early in the third quarter and Taylynn Kizer followed with a 3-pointer to ignite a 9-0 run that put the Tigers in control of the game.

Alexus Hunter scored 14 points to lead Damonte Ranch.

Fernley 54, Dayton 15

FERNLEY — The Vaqueros rolled to a 35-6 halftime lead en route to a 54-15 win in a 3A game.

The Dust Devils were 6-for-34 from the floor and had trouble avoiding turnovers.

“We came apart at the seams and made too many turnovers,” said Dayton coach Kelly Frantz. “I felt the girls were too timid from the start and not making quick decisions.

“I thought some of my girls stepped up and we were able to get some great looks on the offensive end, but when the shots don’t drop, it’s hard to gain any momentum.”

Abby Sikora led Dayton with six points and four rebounds and Cassie Dickenson had six rebounds and a blocked shot. Faith Reid scored four points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Douglas 66, Damonte Ranch 54

MINDEN — Andrew Collins scored eight points during a pivotal stretch at the end of the second quarter to help put Douglas on track to a key 66-54 Sierra League victory against Damonte Ranch on Friday.

Collins finished with a game-high 19 points as Douglas (3-5 league, 5-12 overall) closed out a win at Randy Green Court that boosted its playoff aspirations. Damonte Ranch (5-3, 11-6) came into the game tied for the league lead.

Ian Ozolins also scored 16 points and Josh Carillo 10 for the Tigers. Jordan Aguilar and Collin Pontius scored 13 and 11 points respectively to lead Damonte Ranch offensively.

Sierra Lutheran 47, Sage Ridge 38

The Falcons spotted Sage Ridge a 13-12 lead after the first quarter, and then won the final three quarters, 35-25, en route to a 47-38 Northern Division I win.

“We came out a little flat tonight,” coach Ben Walther said. “Sage Ridge did a good job moving the ball and using its speed to get us off guard. Glad we were able to pull out the win.”

Zane Warkentin scored nine points, had seven steals and pulled down five rebounds. Thomas Mellum and Logan Schinzing scored eight apiece, and Kyman Berger added seven points and eight rebounds.

Fernley 55, Dayton 42

FERNLEY — The Dust Devils turned the ball over just four times, but managed just 13 of 42 from the field in a 55-42 loss to the Vaqueros.

“We had a lot of good looks,” said Dayton assistant Kevin Ply. “We just didn’t shoot the ball well. Our defense was pretty good.”

Trevor Burrows led Dayton with 16 points and five rebounds and Josh Pasasouk added 11 points and six rebounds.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Carson 45, Manogue 42

Nate Smothers scored 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Senators to a 45-42 win over Bishop Manogue

Bryan Peralta scored seven points and Randy Herrera added six.
