LAS VEGAS — Members of Congress are set to tour next week the site of a dormant nuclear waste dump at Nevada’s Yucca Mountain as they aim to restart a licensing process and eventually store nuclear waste there.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports a bipartisan group of U.S. House members will tour the site outside Las Vegas on July 14. The visit comes as Nevada politicians, including Gov. Brian Sandoval, oppose the plan.

The visit will be led by Illinois Republican Rep. John Shimkus. He is the chair of the U.S. Energy and Environment subcommittee on environment.

The tour follows a similar visit in 2017 by Energy Secretary Rick Perry and another tour by members of Congress in 2015.
