Wave baseball lands six on all-region team

Despite a late-season skid that led to an early exit in the playoffs, the Greenwave baseball team landed six players on the all-region team and three on the all-state team.

Senior Jake Wickizer (outfield) and juniors Brenden Larsen (pitcher) and Edgar Alvarado (DH) were selected to the Northern 3A all-region first team while junior Sean McCormick (utility), and sophomores Nate Galusha (second base) and Brock Richardson (outfield) were second-team selections. Alvarado and Larsen were also named to the all-state first team and Wickizer was named to the second team.

Wickizer was one of the team’s most consistent hitters, finishing with a .397 average in 78 plate appearances. He also drove in 18 runs and hit three doubles, two triples and one home run. He struck out only nine times during the season. In the field, Wickizer posted a .927 fielding percentage and had two assists and 49 putouts.

Alvarado was Fallon’s muscle as the DH. He led the team in batting average (.462), hits (37), RBIs (31), home runs (six), slugging percentage (.837) and on-base plus slugging percentage (1.370).

Larsen was the team’s most effective pitcher, leading Fallon in earned-run average at 2.43 while compiling a 5-2 record in 46 innings pitched. He struck out 27.

Coming off a state wrestling title, McCormick was solid on the diamond, playing several positions, including third and shortstop. McCormick posted a .380 batting average, which was third-best on the team, in 104 plate appearances while driving in 23 runs and collecting five doubles and three triples. He was the team leader in stolen bases with 16 and in assists with 48.

Richardson was right behind McCormick at the plate and on the base paths. He finished with a .367 batting average (fourth-best) while leading the team in plate appearances with 113 and runs scored with 32. Richardson was second on the team in stolen bases with 12.

Coming in as a sophomore, Galusha provided stability at second and at the plate. He finished with a .341 batting average in 90 plate appearances while driving in 16 runs and hitting three doubles. In the field, Galusha turned a team-high eight double plays and was third in assists with 37.
