Benavidez pitches no-hitter for Carson Blue Jays

SPARKS — Garritt Benavidez needed just 57 pitches to throw a five-inning no-hitter against Fernley, leading the Carson Blue Jays to an 11-0 win Saturday afternoon at the Reed Summer Tournament.

In their second game of the day, the Blue Jays gave up six runs in the sixth inning and dropped a 9-8 decision to Sparks.

Benavidez struck out five and walked one, and he got plenty of offensive support as his teammates pounded 13 hits, six for extra bases.

The game was scoreless after the first inning, but Carson struck for three in the second, three in the third, four in the fourth and one in the fifth. The game was called after five innings on the 10-run rule.

Josh Ingram started the second-inning rally with a run-scoring single, and the other two runs scored on bases-loaded walks. Delsin Roberts, Josh Buchan and Kahle Good delivered the run-scoring hits in the third to make it 6-0.

Roberts had a monster game, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Good, Kobe Morgan, Buchan and Vernon Painter all had two hits. Good, Roberts, Buchan and Morgan all had two RBIs.

Carson led 5-0 thanks to one in the first, three in the second and one in the third. Casey Martensen delivered the run-scoring hit in the first. An error and run-scoring hits by Good and Kenny Aydelott sparked the three-run outburst. Ingram’s fielder’s choice plated the Carson run in the third.

Sparks cut the lead to 5-2 after three, but the Blue Jays scored one in the fourth on a single by Painter, and an error let in two runs in the fifth to make it 8-2.

In the sixth Carson was one out away from the win when Jade Stotts walked in a run, Colton Domingues singled in two runs, a run scored on a wild pitch, Greg Ottmen singled home the tying run, and an error on Roberts scored the game-winner.

Martensen and Good led the Blue Jays with two hits each.
