Prep Roundup: Walk-off homer lifts Spanish Springs over Carson High

SPARKS — Joey Prizina hit a two-run homer off Colby Zemp with no outs in the bottom of the seventh to snap an 11-all tie and give Spanish Springs a 13-11 win over Carson on Tuesday in a Northern 4A game.

Carson dropped to 0-3 in Northern 4A play, and will meet Reed in a double-header Wednesday (weather permitting) starting at 4 p.m.

Tanner Smith singled off Quinn Overland to lead off the seventh. Overland exited in favor of Zemp. Smith moved to third on an errant pick-off throw by Zemp, and Prizina, hitting for Nate Miller, delivered his game-winning blow moments later.

Carson led 9-4 after two innings, slugging three homers, one each by Teigen Key, Abel Carter and Jared Barnard.

Barnard gave Carson a quick 1-0 lead in the first with a sacrifice fly, and Key made it 3-0 with his second homer. Carson added another run in the first.

Vernon Painter, the Carson starter, allowed two runs in the first, as the Cougars sliced the lead to 4-2.

Carson exploded for five in the second on a three-run homer by Carter and a two-run shot by Barnard.

Spanish Springs scored two in the bottom of the second and then added six in the third for a 10-9 lead. Painter struggled with control, throwing 80 pitches in two-plus innings, just 50 of them for strikes. He deserved a better fate, however, as errors led to eight unearned runs.

Carson scored two in the fourth to take an 11-10 lead, but the Cougars tacked on another unearned run. The score remained that way until the seventh.

Delsin Roberts went 3-for-4, while Carter went 2-for-5 with three RBI and Zemp went 2-4 with an RBI.

Overland pitched well in relief, allowing three hits in 2.2 innings. He was tagged with the loss, however, because of Smith’s single in the seventh.

Tigers sweep North Valleys

Gage Hoyle pitched two scoreless innings in relief and Blake Murray delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning as Douglas rallied for a 3-2 win against North Valleys in game two of a doubleheader at Tiger Field.

Douglas scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to rally for a win that evened its Northern 4A record at 2-2. Jayden Foster, Zach Romero and Hoyle combined to pitch two-hit ball. Foster started and departed after three innings after feeling pain in his elbow (he stayed in the game to hit and played left field).

In game one, the Tigers scored seven runs in the fourth inning to wrap up a 14-2 win. Sean Dunkelman singled two runs home and Ayden Murphy hit a two-run double to highlight the big inning.

Truckee wins series

SPARKS — Truckee scored five runs in the fourth to break open a close game en route to a 13-8 win over Dayton on Tuesday at Golden Eagle Regional Park.

Truckee led 6-4 before its uprising in the fourth.

The win gave Truckee the series edge, 2-1.

Justin Schmidt, Trevor Burrows and Micah Woodruff all had two hits. Woodruff, Zach Woitas and Isaac Von Schoff all drove in two runs for the Dust Devils.

DAYTON BASEBALL

On Monday, Dayton High’s baseball team opened its Northern 3A schedule with a doubleheader split against Truckee.

Dayton took the opener, 8-3, and lost the nightcap, 7-4.

In the opener, Trevor Burrows went 6.2 innings, fanned 12 and allowed five hits. He hit a solo homer in the first to jump start the Dayton offense. Jake Madson went 3-for-5, Carlos Hernandez tripled and Zach Woitas had two hits.

In the second game, Truckee snapped a 4-all tie with three fifth-inning runs.

Hernandez and Woitas each contributed two hits. Hernandez drove in two runs.

SOFTBALL

Dayton sweeps Truckee

SPARKS — Caleigh Onstott pitched a 2-hit shutout and collected two hits, as Dayton completed a three-game sweep of Truckee with a 16-0 win at Golden Eagle Regional Park on Tuesday.

Dayton made it a mercy rule game when it scored 10 runs. A key stat was Truckee pitchers walking 13 batters.

Amanda Woitas went 3-for-5 for the Dust Devils. Tamia Powell went 2-for-4.

Douglas sweeps North Valleys

Mackenzie Brixey hit 6-for-7 and the Douglas Tigers enjoyed a successful season home debut as they swept a Northern 4A double header from North Valleys, 17-1 and 16-1.

Douglas (3-0 conference, 6-1 overall) collected 35 hits in the two games, which were called after four and five innings due to the 15-run mercy rule. Haley Doughty hit 4-for-5 in game two.

Deztiny Vaughn pitched a four-inning complete game in the opener and Kettja Bennett pitched all five innings in the second game for Douglas.

The Tigers are scheduled to host Spanish Springs on Thursday at 3:45 p.m.
