Prep Roundup: Area track teams struggle at Fallon meet

FALLON — It was a tough day for area track and field teams at Saturday’s Fallon Elks Invitational.

The Carson boys finished seventh, Sierra Lutheran 15th and Dayton 22nd. On the girls side, Dayton was 11th and Carson was 16th.

The only Carson individual win came from Hunter Rauh, who captured the 200 in 2:05.19. Ben Granados was second in the 100 (11.35) and fourth in the 200 (23.94). Tanner Kalicki was sixth in the triple jump at 40-2 1/2. Gabe Gabica was seventh in the pole vault at 12 feet.

Carson’s 1600 relay quartet of Darryll Heyward, Gryphon Matthies, Chance Smith and Rauh was second in 3:40.72. The 800 relay was sixth in 1:38.69.

The Sierra Lutheran boys got a fourth from Jared Marchegger in the 1600 (4:36.40), a fifth from Peyton Hedwall in the shot (44-5 1/2). Bret Walker was sixth in the shot at 41-9 1/2.

The Dayton boys got a seventh from David Delfin in the discus (127-4) and an eighth from Jeffrey Walker in the pole vault at 11-6

GIRLS

The Dayton girls got a first in the long jump (16-5 1/2) and a third in the triple jump (34-9 1/2) from Ashley Mason. Rebecca Mason was fifth in the high jump at 4-10 and seventh in the 400 at 1:05.29.

Dayton’s 800 relay quartet was fourth with a 1:50.84 thanks to the efforts of the Masons, Macie Callan and Sydney Strickler.

The Carson girls were led by Amanda Schulz in the discus (104-3 1/2) and Alyssa Rowe in the shot put (32-8 1/2). Both placed in the top five.

SOFTBALL

Douglas sweeps Reed

MINDEN — Destiny Vaughan pitched 10 innings to earn credit for two wins as the Douglas bested Reed, 7-0 and 9-2, in a Northern 4A conference doubleheader on Saturday.

Vaughan retired 21 of the 22 batters she faced and finished with a one-hit shutout in game one. The sophomore right-hander came on to pitch three innings in relief in game two as Douglas improved its conference record to 5-0 in conference (8-1 overall).

Alyssa Smokey’s RBI double with two outs in the fifth inning broke a 2-2 tie and Haley Doughty hit a bases clearing double to highlight a six-run rally in the sixth for the Tigers.

In game one, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning and added insurance with four runs in the sixth.

BASEBALL

Sierra Lutheran sweeps

YERINGTON – Sierra Lutheran swept Yerington, 9-7 and 9-8, in a doubleheader Friday afternoon.

It was the first time in school history the Falcons defeated Yerington.

“We were happy with the way we performed,” assistant coach Brandon Neal said. “It was nice to see our bats get going.”

One of the bats belonged to Zane Warkentin, who produced six hits in the two contests. He went 6-for-9 in the sweep.

Seth Houghton went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI in the opener, and Wyatt Simpson delivered a key two-run single.

In the second game, Austin Stone had a pinch-hit two-run single that clinched the game for Sierra Lutheran. Rocky DiMartino went 2-for-4.
