Community Sports: Lehman, Raper star in rodeo

Brynn Lehman and Corley Raper celebrated their final home appearances in style this past weekend for the Douglas-Carson High School Rodeo Club at its own rodeo.

Raper, a Douglas High senior, and Lehman, a Carson High senior, combined to register four top-two finishes during competition held Saturday and Sunday at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

Lehman and Payson McGill placed 1-2 in breakaway roping. Lehman came from behind to win on the strength of her 3.560 clocking for the second go (fastest time overall). McGill stood fourth after the first go with her time of 4.360.

Lehman and Raper placed second and third in pole bending with respective two-run times of 42.188 and 42.919.

Raper placed second in a closely contested barrel race with a time of 36.238, one-tenth of a second behind Battle Mountain’s Emma Lemaire (36.115). A half-second separated the top eight, as Ashley Fitzpatrick placed eighth in 36.649 for Douglas-Carson.

Raper also placed second in goat tying with a 17.440, less than one-tenth behind Whitney Slack of Wells. Denver McGill and Lehman placed fifth and seventh respectively in the event.

Raper also placed fourth in girls cutting, only two points out of the top spot, and shared third-place with Fallon’s Chloe Lambert in team roping.

In the junior high school competition, Reno McGill won the bareback steer riding, saddle bronc steer riding and bull riding. McGill and Colby Morian placed second and third in boys goat tying and McGill placed second in the rifle shoot.

Mckenzie Raper won the girls goat tying, placed third in girls breakaway roping and fifth in barrel racing.

Also for the Douglas-Carson club, Cole English placed third in boys breakaway roping and fifth in goat tying. McGill also placed third in chute dogging and ribbon roping.

Megan Dondero placed 13th in ribbon roping on the strength of her 21.310 clocking that was the fifth fastest of the second go.

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association schedule moves onto Lincoln County this weekend and then concludes on May 12-13 in Wells. The state finals will be held on May 24-28 in Winnemucca.

Smokey leads Carson High at regional golf

Galena and Bishop Manogue’s golf teams finished 1-2 and have qualified for next week’s NIAA 4A State Tournament.

Galena finished the 36-hole tournament, which concluded with 18 holes Tuesday at Eagle Valley West, with a score of 593 (292-301) and Manogue finished with a two-day total of 605.

Galena’s Ian Gilligan shot a 36-hole total of 142 to edge Manogue’s Ollie Osborne by one shot for medalist honors.

Xander Smokey was Carson’s top finisher finishing with a two-day total of 185, good for a share of 32nd place. Ty Evans (200) and Ethan Lepire (202) were 41st and 42nd, respectively.

The state tournament is next Monday and Tuesday in Southern Nevada.

Packers win in flag football

The Packers beat the Cowboys 59-45 in a shootout in this week’s NFL Talents Carson City Flag Football League featured game.

In other games, the 49ers beat the Cowboys 34-21 and the Chiefs beat the Rams 40-12.

Martinez wins Flight A of CV Men’s Club

Augie Martinez’s 66 won Flight A in the Carson Valley Men’s Golf Club play last Sunday.

Chris Willing’s 72 was second. Fred Coons (73) was third.

Brent Holderma (67) was first in Flight B. Bill Allen (68) won a tie breaker over Jim Pearson.

In Flight C, Bruce Sanford’s 67 took first. Willie Tenney (68) was good enough for second. Jack Zippwald (71) was third.

Closest to the pin on the first hole was Martinez. Allen took honor on Hole 18.

Streeter captures

Flight at E. Valley

Kathy Streeter won Flight 1 at Eagle Valley with a low gross of 81 and Annette Ramirez had a low gross of 91 and a net of 67. Sandy Lawrence had a net of 68.

In Flight 2, Gail Nelson had a low gross of 100 and Bonnie MacQuarrie had a 108. Nelson had a low net of 65 and Mary Bennett had a 70.

Volleyball camps set

for Lake Tahoe area

Peak Volleyball is hosting three beach volleyball camps this summer. The camps are open to players in fifth through 12th grades. Players are grouped by experience and training is adjusted by playing level.

The Wild Island Beach Volleyball Camp is June 14-16. The camp will be located inside the waterpark.

The seventh annual Donner Lake Beach Volleyball Camp is July 16-18 at the West End beach in Truckee. This camp has beach and grass volleyball courts.

The eighth annual Lake Tahoe Indoor Volleyball Camp will be at North Tahoe High School in Tahoe City July 20-22.
