Fallon teams open season in tournaments

Coming off strong finishes last season, the Greenwave basketball and wrestling teams are in action this weekend to open the new season.

The defending state champion girls basketball team opens the season on Thursday in the Reno Winter Challenge Tournament. Anne Smith’s girls team faces Damonte Ranch at 6:30 p.m. at Spanish Springs High School on Thursday and then takes on Reno at 7:30 at Reno High on Friday. Fallon concludes the tournament with Spanish Springs on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

The boys team, which finished second in the league last year, opens in the Sparks Railroader Shootout Tournament and will face Excel Christian on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Sparks High School. Chelle Dalager’s team will also play on Friday and Saturday. Game times and opponents are still to be determined.

Both basketball teams open league play on Dec. 11 against Truckee.

The Greenwave wrestling team, which returns three of its four state champs, hosts the annual two-day Earl Wilkens Memorial Tournament, beginning on Friday. Fallon will go out of state in the next two weekend tournaments before returning to Reno for the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 21 and 22, followed by the Sierra Nevada Classic on Dec. 27 and 28.
