Silver Dollars and Wooden Nickels is a weekly feature in the Appeal’s Opinion pages in which the Appeal gives Silver Dollars to those who deserve recognition and occasionally a Wooden Nickel to those who deserve criticism.

SILVER DOLLAR: Tuesday will be the 17th anniversary of 9/11, September 11, 2001. We will always remember those who lost their lives on that day. We will also remember all those who sacrificed on that day and since and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice on that day and since, including first responders and our military. ALWAYS.

SILVER DOLLAR: We will also always remember Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, and Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, and Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, who lost their lives on Sept. 6, 2011 during a shooting at Carson City’s International House of Pancakes. ALWAYS.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the community for helping the Carson Tahoe Health Foundation raise $130,000 during HopeFest8 to help with Carson Tahoe Health provide much needed support for local cancer patients.

SILVER DOLLAR: To soon-to-be 102-year-old Thelma Nelson, who continues to show her skills at bridge.
