The Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties gathers for a public meeting featuring guest speakers and discussion of regional issues on the second Thursday of each month at 9 a.m. This month’s breakfast meeting takes place on Sept. 13 at the Silver Springs Community Center in the Lahontan meeting room at 2945 Fort Churchill Street.

Rebekah Stetson, Nevada Grassroots Climate Outreach Consultant, will speak about her work with the National Wildlife Federation. She’ll explain how rural Nevadans can help improve community health through environmental advocacy.

Healthy Communities’ Lisa Godenick, MPH, will describe some evidence-based tools and strategies for rural opioid work. This August she attended a conference titled, “Tools and Strategies for Rural Opioid Work” in Quincy, California, that was hosted by the Plumas County Public Health Agency in conjunction with the Northern Sierra Opioid Safety Coalition.

Kyle Roerink, Communications Director for Nevadans for a Clean Energy Future, will speak about Question 6, a ballot measure that would require electric suppliers to provide at least 50 percent of their total electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Roerink will speak about Question 6, including its cost effectiveness, and potential impacts on job creation and health.

In addition to presentations from guest speakers about diverse topics, the monthly Coalition meeting also serves as a way for the local, state, federal and tribal groups and community volunteers who comprise the Coalition to gather and share news. The Coalition offers an efficient way to collaborate strategically on system changes that improve access to affordable, local food and to health care, and that support community-based, sustainable economic development.
