With only a couple weeks left in the season, the Lady Wave golf team is pushing to qualify at least one, if not two, golfers to next month’s state tournament.

Returning seniors Allie Lister and Glenda Lee lead this year’s team and are positioning themselves to qualify as individuals for the postseason tournament although the team has finished last in all four tournaments. Nevertheless, scores have been improving for third-year coach Sandy Vanderbeek’s team.

“All players are quickly learning and continuing to fine-tune their swings,” she said. “The short game is our focus with the understanding that with time and strength, the distance comes. We’re trying to have everyone improve their own game. We would like to continue sending individuals to state.”

Along with Lister and Lee, also returning to the team are seniors Kim Park and Char Frederick, and junior Shasta Mori. New to the team are senior Shelby Fairfield, juniors Emily Richards and Tiffany Sorensen, sophomores Molly Woolsey and Julia Boswell, and freshmen Gabriana Loop and Lainee Reid.

Vanderbeek said her seniors, especially Lister and Lee, have stepped up in helping the newcomers around the golf course.

“Allie and Glenda are taking the lead and are helping the newer players out with learning the routines and the golf terms,” she added. “This is a great bunch of hardworking golfers. We’re just trying to get the scores down.”

In the first tournament of the year at Spring Creek, Fallon finished seventh with a 515 but improved by two strokes in the next tournament in Elko. Fallon broke the 500 barrier in its last two tournaments, posting a 497 at South Tahoe and 499 at Truckee.

Lowry leads the league halfway through the season as teams return to action next week with tournaments in Dayton and Fallon before concluding the following week in Fernley and Winnemucca. The Buckaroos have a 384.5 team averaged followed by Spring Creek (414.75), Truckee (416.25) and Elko (411).

The top three teams from the Northern League qualify for the state tournament in Truckee along with the top six individuals from non-qualifying teams. At the midway mark, Lowry, Spring Creek and Truckee would qualify as teams. Lister sits in ninth for the non-qualifier portion and is just under three strokes behind in average for the sixth and final spot.
