Community sports: Umpires needed for spring baseball

The spring baseball season starts soon, and umpires are needed for the season. If there are not enough umpires, not all of the games will be staffed.

No experience is needed, and those who umpire will be trained and will receive help in finding equipment and uniforms. Those with a baseball background — players, coaches and fans – are encouraged to participate.

Those who umpire also earn extra income. Games are weeknights at 5:30 or 6 p.m. and all-day Saturday.

An umpire clinic will be held on Sunday, April 14 at 9 a.m. at Sun Valley Regional Park. Cost is a $10 donation. Lunch will be provided. RSVP or for information, call Chris Whitbeck at 775-846-0822 or cwhitbeck@att.net.

Empire Ranch Men hold opening tournament

The first tournament of 2019 for the Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Golf Club was held on Wednesday. This individual stroke play tournament was played on the Empire Ranch Golf Course with favorable weather and good attendance.

Flight A was won by Steve Fagnant with a net score of 63 followed by Geoff Swann with a 65 and Michael Andrade and Gary Dalen both with 66. Flight B was won by Kurt Cleek with a net score of 58 followed by Ken Cuneo with 62, Joe Stuart with 63 and Mike Vadnais with 64. Bob White led Flight C with net score of 60 followed by Ralph Bothe, Nils Sharpe and Joe Gibson all with net scores of 66.

Sierra Lutheran High School Golf Classic

Sierra Lutheran High School will host its annual Sierra Golf Classic on Saturday, June 1, at Silver Oak Golf Course, which is the title sponsor for this year’s event.

The best ball, scramble event benefiting Sierra Lutheran Athletics offers participants a great day of food, fun, and fellowship, which includes greens fees, a barbecue lunch, a tournament polo shirt, courtesy of Augusta-Holloway & Eastbay athletic apparel, a swag bag, and tournament prizes.

Embedded within the tournament is the Church Trophy competition that offers local churches the chance to enter a foursome from the same church to compete for the perpetual trophy.

Hogan takes second

Carson City’s Terry Hogan, 81, placed second in the men’s 70 and over division in the half marathon on Sunday in the Reno Downtown River Run. Hogan is running on behalf of Katie Roberts, a veterinarian at Lone Mountain Veterinary Hospital who has been battling breast cancer and for cancer awareness. Lone Mountain Veterinary Hospital sponsored Hogan’s appearance. Hogan’s ultimate goal is to qualify for the Boston Marathon.
