Dayton schools lock-in caused by employee with pellet gun

UPDATE, 3:39 p.m., Wednesday

Lyon County School District released a statement Wednesday after a precautionary lock-in was lifted at Dayton Elementary, Intermediate and High schools that the individual seen near the sites was a Lyon County employee with a pellet gun attempting to address an issue related to squirrels.

Students and staff were in no danger at any time, according to the release.

The schools were placed in lock-in mode as a precautionary measure in the morning while Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and administration responded to calls of the individual seen with a firearm.

The LCSO later described the individual as a maintenance worker with Lyon County. School district administrative assistant Margaret Heim said normal scheduling continued as normal at each of the schools.

UPDATE, 1:12 p.m. Wednesday

A notice on the Dayton High School website says the 'lock-in' has been lifted.

"The precautionary lock-in at Dayton Elementary, Intermediate and High Schools has been lifted," the notice says. "As a result of the prompt actions of law enforcement, school operations have proceeded as normal with all students and staff safe and secure."

Dayton Elementary, Intermediate and High Schools were placed in a “lock-in” mode as a precautionary measure, Lyon County School District administrative assistant Margaret Heim confirmed Wednesday.

Lyon County Sheriff’s Office and administration were responding to calls of an individual seen near the sites with a firearm. School officials immediately responded and put the schools in the precautionary lock-in, Heim said, with scheduling continuing as normal.

According to Dayton High School’s website, it was reported the individual was no longer in proximity of the schools. The campuses were waiting word from the LCSO.
