Prep Roundup: Carson High track, softball, baseball, golf in action

Down 4-1 going into the fourth inning, the Carson High softball team face another important moment in its season against another one of the Northern 4A’s upper echelon teams in McQueen.

Carson rose to the task, coming back for a 7-5 win on Thursday at McQueen. The big hit came in the fifth inning when Camryn Quilling belted a two-run home run to give the Senators a 6-5 lead.

The Senators were able to rally against Rylie Miller, who had shut down Carson in McQueen’s 4-2 win in the two teams first meeting.

Bella Kordonowy homered in the first to give CHS a 1-0 lead. But McQueen responded by scoring four runs in the third to take a 4-1 advantage.

But CHS rallied to tie the game in the fourth 4-4 when Amaya Mendeguia, Kailee Luschar and Kennedy Redican all drove in a run. After McQueen took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth, Quilling hit her homer on a 1-2 pitch in the fifth to give the Senators a 6-5 lead. Carson added a run in the seventh.

Jailene Salciedo went the distance for the win, striking out nine over seven innings for Carson. Miller allowed four runs on five hits over four innings while striking out seven and walking one.

CHS had 11 hits, Mendeguia, Quilling and Kassidy Cooley each had two hits for the Senators.

Manogue 9, CHS 7

Carson’s comeback attempt in the seventh inning fell short in a battle of two of the Northern 4A’s top teams on Tuesday in Reno. CHS trailed 9-4 going into the seventh when Kailee Luschar, Bella Kordonowy and Jailene Salciedo all hit solo home runs to bring the Senators to within 9-7 before Carson fell short.

CHS took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles by Salciedo and Kassidy Cooley. But Manogue came back to score three runs in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead and added four runs in the fifth to take an 8-4 lead.

Salciedo went 3-for-4, Kailee and Kedra Luschar each went 2-for-4 and Amaya Mendegia added a hit for the Senators.

Dayton 6, Yerington 5

Dayton trailed 5-1 but scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-5 lead on its way to the win on Wednesday.

Shaye Thompson’s RBI single gave the Dust Devils a 1-0 lead in the second. Dayton rallied in the fourth on the strenght of Amanda Woitas’ three-run triple. Thompson also had an RBI double in the fourth.

Caleigh Onstott pitched a complete game for the win for the Dust Devils. Thompson went 2-for-3 for Dayton.

BASEBALL

CHS drops two heartbreakers

Carson went toe-to-toe with two of the Northern 4A’s upper echelon teams this past week, but ended up taking two heartbreaking losses. Especially heartbreaking was Thursday’s loss at Galena in which CHS couldn’t hold a 6-0 lead before falling 7-6. Carson also lost to Manogue 5-4 in eight innings on Tuesday at Ron McNutt Field.

CHS lost to Galena despite outhitting the Grizzlies 11-7. Carson exploded for five runs in the second inning on Kobe Morgan’s two-run single and Kahle Good’s three-run home run to take a 5-0 lead.

The Senators added a run in third to take a 6-0 lead. But Galena scored three runs in the fourth and four runs in the sixth to come back for the win.

Vernon Painter started on the mound for Carson and struck out five over four innings. Good, Delsin Roberts, Justin Nussbaumer, and Casey Martensen all had two hits for CHS.

In the game with Manogue, the Miners took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but CHS responded with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-1 lead. Garrett Benavidez helped spark the rally with an RBI single.

Manogue went on to take a 4-3 lead before Justin Nussbaumer hit an RBI single in the sixth for Carson to tie the score 4-4. But the Miners eventually scored in the eighth for the win.

Max Fontaine was the tough luck loser for Carson in relief, allowing one run on three hits over three innings while striking out five and walking none.

Both teams’ pitching was able to scatter a number of hits as Manogue finished with 12 hits and CHS finished with 10. Casey Martensen went 3-for-4 and Nussbaumer and Benavidez each added two hits for the Senators.

GOLF

CHS third in standings

The Carson High boys golf team remained in third place in the overall Sierra League standings after a fourth place finish at the third Sierra League Tournament of the year at Reno’s Sierra Sage on Wednesday.

Galena won the event with a 289 and was followed by Manogue (327), Douglas (343) and CHS (355). In the overall league standings, Galena is in first, Manogue is in second, CHS third and Douglas fourth.

Zander Smokey and Lukas Taggart both had outstanding rounds for the Senators on Wednesday. Smokey finished sixth with a 78 and Taggart was ninth after shooting an 83. Also for Carson, Daniel Escalante shot a 95, Brandon Engels fired a 99 and Dante DeLuca added a 109.

TRACK

CHS girls win meet

Even though the Carson High boys and girls track teams were coming off the Glenn Poole Invitational on Saturday and didn’t have a number of its athletes in their strongest events, the Senators still had a number of highlights in a meet they hosted on Tuesday.

And the Carson girls were still able to win the meet, edging out Galena and Spanish Springs. Carson won with 80 points, edging Galena (79) and Spanish Springs (72). In the boys meet, Spanish Springs won with 111 points, Galena was second with 68 points and Carson as third with 58 points.

Ashley Britt had an outstanding race in the 100 hurdles, winning the event in a season best 16.33 seconds. Britt also won the 300 hurdles in 49.33.

Abby Pradere ran the 400 for the first time this season and posted a solid time of 1:01.85 to win the event. Other winners for Carson were Natalyn Wakeling in the 100 in 13.32, Katherine Oppedahl in the 200 in 27.94, McKenna Budd in the 800 in 2:38.79 and Merce Tarrayo in the shot put at 34-7. Terrayo also took second in the discus at 102-10.

Taryn Encinas, Annika Wick, Wakeling and Erica Basa also won the 4x100 relay for Carson in 54.09 and Wick, Britt, Oppedahl and Encinas won the 4x200 for the Senators in 1:53.68.

For Carson’s boys, the Senators went 1-2-3 in the 400 as Hunter Rauh won in 55.03, Nicholas Batien took second in 55.15 and Ethan Byasse was third in 55.92. Gilbert Vasquez-Polanco, Dominic Martinez, Misrael Becerra and Hunter Matthies won the 4x200 in 1:38.91 and Jakob Heller won the triple jump at 40-7.
