Nevada’s prison employees this week became the first group of state workers to file to have a union represent them in contract negotiations.
The move comes after the 2019 Legislature and Gov. Steve Sisolak approved legislation giving state workers collective bargaining rights.
They voted to join the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Local 4041.
Spokesman Fred Fonseca, a correctional officer, said they join more than 65,000 officers currently represented by AFSCME nationwide in bargaining for wages, working conditions and resources.
The next step is to file with the state setting up bargaining units determined by job classifications and select bargaining teams to negotiate with the state.
